Hillside Ranch

Castro Valley, CA

A single-level ranch set on a hillside, with a back patio that looks out over the valley and the hills beyond. Inside, the home still wears its original finishes — red oak floors, cream cabinetry, granite counters — so the staging deliberately leaned the other way: black-and-white geometric art, slim black dining chairs, a black oval coffee table, and a graphic rug, softened by a curved white sofa and cream bouclé chairs. The contrast is what does the work, turning warm wood tones from dated into deliberate. The family room's white brick arched fireplace anchors the whole floor.
